FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ORGANIC FELT FABRICS

Q.

What is organic felt?

A.

Organic felt is a nonwoven fabric obtained through a mechanical process that intertwines natural fibers. These sustainable textiles are thermoregulable, odorless, breathable and versatile, which means they can adapt to a number of productive scenarios.

Q.

Which materials are used for producing organic felt fabrics?

A.

Organic felt fabrics can be produced with fibers of vegetable or animal origin. We chose alpaca, sheep wool, cotton and cabuya as our main fibers. Our selection of materials goes beyond quality. As an eco-friendly company, we are very sensitive to the welfare of animals and the ecosystem, from which we obtain our products.

Furthermore, we purchase materials under fair trade standards in developing-rural-areas in the highlands of Ecuador. In these places, we also work with the communities in order to train and advice them in relation to eco-friendly fiber production practices. Afterwards, we classify, clean and transform these fibers into beautiful textiles in our workshop in Quito.

Q.

Do shearing hurt sheep and alpacas?

A.

Not at all. Adult sheep and alpacas have wool in continuous growth and must be sheared for health reasons, pretty much as humans do. A heavy fleece not only causes sheep and alpacas to be exposed to high temperatures in summer, it also provides an ideal environment for parasites. For this reason alpacas and sheep should be sheared according to a yearly calendar.

Additionally, we take the selection of our suppliers very seriously. We seek to work only with suppliers that apply a free range breeding system. This way we guarantee that our suppliers care about their animals as much as we do.

Q.

How can I know if organic felt fabrics are appropriate for my project?

Organic felt fabrics are extremely versatile textiles. Their thickness, elasticity, and texture vary depending on the used fibers and the number of layers they have. We personalize our felt fabrics according to the needs of your project, combining from 2 to 8 layers of alpaca fiber, sheep wool, cotton and cabuya. Send us a message today! Q.

Can I wash organic felt fabrics?

A.

Yes, it is not only possible, but necessary. In order to do so, you must take similar care to that taken when washing any wool product. Organic felt fabrics can be kept in perfect conditions if you dry clean, use a steam system or wash them by hand. It’s important that you don’t abruptly change temperatures to avoid shrinking the fibers. Don’t use washing machines and dryers, as these deteriorate the natural fibers of organic felt fabrics.

Q.

Is it true that organic felt resists fire?

A.

Yes it's correct. The fleece that use for creating our sustainable textiles comes from sheep and alpacas. These special fibers have a natural resistance to fire.

Q.

Do organic felt fabrics cause itchy skin?

A.

It really depends on the type of fleece used for producing the felt fabric. Our 100% alpaca felt doesn’t cause itching, since alpaca fiber is hypoallergenic and silky. When it comes to felt made with sheep wool, it depends on the fineness of the fiber. Our extra-fine sheep fiber is extremely delicate with the skin and doesn’t cause itchiness. However, varieties of lesser finesse could cause it if in contact with the skin.

Q.

Can organic felt be ironed?

A.

Yes, organic felt can be ironed delicately by using water vapor or a damp white cloth. We recommend you to iron our felt fabrics after washing and drying them.

Q.

Is it normal that some fibers come off the felt?

A.

Yes, it is completely normal. Our felt fabrics are made with 100% organic materials. It’s natural that smallest fibers are detached, process known as "pilling". To keep an organic felt fabric looking new, wet your clean hand and pass it over the felt fabric to remove the small fibers that have been detached.
